March on Washington

This event made its mark in history....
People from all over the world gathered to hear and see civil rights activists and speakers talk about the peoples rights, and equality. There were many supporters.
Many speakers from all over the country came.
The renowned Martin Luther King Jr., Roy Wilkins, Whitney Young, James Farmer, and John Lewis.
It was A. Philip Randolph's idea to use this form of protest. At one point his idea was shot down, but they decided to continue on with their initial plan.
The date was set.
The march was to be held August 28th, 1963.

Many people wonder what the purpose of the march was. It was a march for jobs and freedom.
They were fighting for equality and civil rights. It was the largest non-violent civil movement in U.S history. The event made its mark in history and is to never to be forgotten.
Who came to the March?
100,000 civilians were expected to attend the march.6,000 firemen and policmen were assinged to the march. American Nazis went to the civil rights march.250,000 people actually came to it.
How much money did the march cost?
The budget for the march was $120,000. Before the march they sold official buttons for 50 cents to help raise money. they also sold official mementos fo a dollar. From this they got $320,000.
Interesting Facts:
Nine out of the ten leaders came. James Farmer was in jail. He could not attend becuase of a controversey at another march.
Liquor sales were banned.
American Nazis were planning to do something bad to delay or possiably stop the march.
