Martin Luther King Assassination
What were some key locations?
Martin Luther King was assassinated on April 4, 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee, in room 306 on the second floor of the Lorraine Hotel. He was standing on the balcony when the fatal shot was fired at 6:01 p.m. He was rushed to the St. Joseph Hospital where he died at 7:05 p.m. After his death he was taken to the Shelby County Morgue. His grave is in Atlanta, Georgia at the Reflecting Pool.
Who was the shooter?
James Earl Ray was already a white convict and many think he was hired by a southern corporation. He was found 36 hours later in a pub in London. He later admitted that he did shoot MLK but thought he would get away with it because of the FBI chief's hatred for Martin. Ray used a 30.06 caliber rifle to shoot Martin Luther King. He would spend the rest of his life in jail until he died from kidney failure. Many people believe that Ray was part of a conspiracy to assassinate King but there is no evidince supporting this theory.
Why was he in Memphis?
Martin was in Memphis supporting a sanitation workers strike that began on January 31, 1968. It was sparked when 22 African American workers were sent home due to weather but not any whites. He spoke to about 15,000 people and in his speech he foretold violence for himself and also talked about the Promised Land. It was called " I've been to the mountain top".
What were the conseqences?
There were riots all across the nation following Dr. King's death. Even though he preached nonvilence violence often occured. President Kennedy gave a speech where he remembered Dr. King. Even the Academy awards and the opening baseball game were postponed. Today of course we celebrate his birthday every year to remember the greatest Civil Rights leader ever.
