Their names were Thelma Mothershed, Ernest Green, Carlotta Walls, Elizabeth Eckford, Minnijean Brown, Gloria Ray, Jefferson Thomas, Terrance Roberts, and Melba Pattilo. The founder of the Little Rock Nine was Daisy Bates. President Eisenhower took part in the nine's story by sending them troops to protect the nine. What was their purpose for integrating Central High and what happened as the school year progressed?: The Little Rock Nine wanted to be the first African American students to graduate and integrate Central High School. Unfortunatly Governor Faubus wanted to do everything in his power to prevent the nine's dreams of graduating. President Eisenhower was fortunatley on the nine's side of integrating Central High. Therefor he sent tons of paratroopers to make sure that the students would not be harmed, to keep peace, and to make sure no violence had broken out. He also assigned personal paratroopers for walking them to class and making sure no one bothered them. Still the white students managed to beat on them. Everyone managed to get through the school year safely... except for Minnijean Brown. She was suspended from the school for six days then was suspended again. She was suspended for six days because a white boy harrased her and insulted her and called her dirty words. She just couldn't take it any longer so she got her hot chili lunch and dumped it on the boys head. She was suspended again for calling a white girl "White Trash" after the white girl insulted her of her race and called her a dirty word. None of the white students who insulted her were suspended.
When did Ernest Green graduate and what happened after he did?: Ernest Green was the first of the Little Rock Nine to graduate Central High in May of 1957. He was not only the first but also the only Black that year. As he got up to get his diploma after his name was called no one clapped. Ernest Green said quote "I figured they didn't have to, because after I got that diploma I accomplished what I came here for". Governor Faubus and the white citizens of Little Rock Arkansas were outraged by Ernest's graduation. Governor Faubus did everything he could to prevent the rest of the nine from graduating. He closed down all the public high schools at the next school year. The Supreme Court called his acts quote "Unjust" and reopened the public high schools. Most of nine's parents were fired from their jobs and were threatened, so they moved away. Others of the nine went to new high schools. Two of the nine still didn't give up and eventually graduated from Central High. Their names were Carlotta Walls and Jefferson Thomas.
About Elizabeth Eckford:
One day Daisy Bates had planned a meeting for the Little Rock Nine at Central High, but she called it off. Elizabeth Eckford din't know that Daisy had called the meeting off so she went to Central High anyway. Once she got there she was confronted by a white mob. The soldiers had turned her away from the school so then she went to sit at the bus stop. Along the way to the bus stop she found herself being yelled at by a lady named Hazel Massery. The girl with her mouth open is Hazel Massery. She is later sorry for what she had done and befriended Elizabeth. Here are some pictures:
