Jackie Robinson

Who is Jackie Robinson and what did he do?   

 

 

    Jack Roosevelt Robinson, other wise known as Jackie Robinson, was the first African American to play in the MLB.  He batted right handed and caught right handed.  Jackie started out in 1945 when he played one season in a negro baseball leauge and played on a team named Indionapolise Clowns.  Then was chosen by Branch Rickey, a vice president with the Brooklyn Dodgers, to help integrate Major League baseball.  Jackie joined the Montreal Royals, a farm team of the Brooklyn Dodgers, in 1945.  He moved to Florida to do spring training with the Royals in 1946.  He played his first game with the Royals on March 17, the same year.  On April 15, 1947, Jackie played his first season of MLB baseball for the Brooklyn Dodgers.  Many teams did not react to Jackie playing in the MLB well.  Most teams harrased Jackie and some even threatend to not play the Dodgers.  Jackie played on 6 world series teams.

What did Jackie have to do with civil Rights

   Jackie Robinson was the man that integrated Major League Baseball.  That is very important to civil rights.  This move by Jackie encouraged others to fight for justice and gave many African Americans hope.  If it weren't for Jackie very amazing baseball stars such as Willie May,   He quoted"  Jackie was a forerunner of the Civil Rights movement.  He was a very important figure in the establishement and growth of the Freedom Bank which was an African American owned and opperated entity in the 1960s.  He also wrote a syndicated newspaper article for many years.  Jackie was a very strong supporter of Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.

 

 

 

 

 What are some awards he won?

 

 

   Jackie won the first rookie of the year award, the Sporting News rookie of the year, the National League MVP award, the congressional gold medal, and the presidential medal of freedom.
