What was the purpose of the March on Washington?

The cause for the March on Washington was to demand passage of the Civil Rights Act and equality in jobs and freedom. This was the major topic discussed at the Lincoln Memorial in front of 250,000 people. The demonstrators attending the March were of different races and religions and all spoke in favor of these goals.

Did the March achieve its purpose?

Yes, it was the largest demonstration ever seen in the nation's capital up to that time. The speeches read by civil rights leaders were sent out to people around the world. Coverage of the March was worldwide and it was one of the first televised events. The Civil Rights Act was passed the next year. The next year Time magazine named King its Man of the Year for 1963 and a few months later he was awareded the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize.

Who was the main leader in the March On Washington?

The main leader in the March On Washington was Martin Luther King Jr. He, along with other civil rights leaders, led the march and each made a speech. MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech was, and still is, one of the most touching and historic ever delivered. His speech spoke of his dream of "racial equality" and "freedom". One other main leader was president John F. Kennedy. He strongly supported the March On Washington. Kennedy helped King lead the March On Washington and other black and white leaders attended and gave speeches as well.

Why was job equality important?

When any person, of any color or race, goes for a job interview, they shouldn't get rejected just because of their race. The march protested how everyone was not treated equaly. It also was a demonstration how the African Americans wanted freedom now, they wanted the civil rights act to be passed "now" and not later.

When was the March planned?

Martin Luther King, Jr., planned the March after he was released from the Birmingham jail, as part of Project C, in April 1963.

Why did the March occur then?

So many people started to protest because they wanted Civil Rights Act law to pass "now" and not "later"! Everyone wanted to be free. A lot of people were being treated unequally. All they wanted was to be free.

Who were some people that attended The March On Washington?

One of the main leaders is John F. Kennedy. He backed a Civil Rights act. A. Philip Randolph was another important leader. He was one of The March On Washington founders. Bayard Rustin was one of the Coordinators for The March On Washington. And there are many more people.

Where did the March On Washington start and where did it end?

The March On Washington occured in Washington D.C. It was a mile long walk and over 200,000 people participated in. The March ended at the Lincoln Memorial where Doctor Martin Luther King Jr. gave his "I Have A Dream" Speech".

Was the March violent?

No, it was not. More than 6,000 police were assigned to the March to make sure there was as little violence as possible. The government made alcohol illegal from the August 27 to August 29.

When did The March On Washington start and when did it end?

The March started on August 28, 1963. It was only about a mile to the Lincoln Memorial so it ended on the 28th also.

Why did they choose a march to make their point?

Because it was a way to show how many people believed in their cause without violance or destruction. It also was a good event for the press tocover as it was in Washington, D.C. where the Congress was meeting to vote on the Civil Rights Act.

The flag of Georgia

The Confederate flag ( st. Andrews cross) is a sign of hatred and racism. The Stars and Bars flag shows our conferderate history but does not give out much hate. The confederate flag is a racist symbol becuase it was used in battles; the battles were to stay seceeded in the south and to continue slavery. America/Georgia does not want to be remembered for its slavery and civil war.

The Georgia flag was changed in 1956 because John Bell suggested a new flag related to the confederate battle flag. Our flag is to show pride in out history, but not offend anyone.
